Sydney Minor Hockey is very appreciative of the contribution of its volunteers who accept
the responsibility of coaching within our organization.
These positions represent significant trust and individuals are subject to intensive and
ongoing screening more so than volunteers not directly involved with the players.
The following sites and pages are intended to help coaches
deal with some of the issues that arise when you are
coaching youth sports.

Our focus is with hockey but the same rules
would apply for most sports.

Within these pages are links to other sites and
exerts from articles which deal with this subject.

Also included are forms for downloading which may help
with team organization through the season.
I will place the emotional and physical well
being of my players ahead of a personal
desire to win.
I will be reasonable when scheduling games
and practices, remembering that players
have other interests and obligations.
I will do provide a safe playing situation
for my players and teach them to play fairly
and respect the rules, officials and opponents.
I will organize practices that are fun
and challenging for all my players and I will
ensure that all players get equal instruction.
I will make my players feel like winners
every time by offering praise for
competing fairly and trying hard.
I will not ridicule or yell at my players for
making mistakes or for performing poorly.
I will lead by example in demonstrating
fair play and sportsmanship to all my players.
I will provide a sports environment for my team
that is free of drugs, tobacco, and alcohol,
and refrain from their use at all team events.
I will be knowledgeable in the rules
of the sport, and I will teach these rules
to my players.
I will support all efforts to remove verbal
and physical abuse from children's
hockey activities.
I will use coaching techniques appropriate
for the player's age and skills that I teach.
I will obtain proper training and continue
to upgrade my coaching skills.
I will remember that I am a youth sports coach, and that the game is
for children and not adults.
I will work in cooperation with officials for the benefit of the game.
